What to look for
Opening system. Pull-out mechanisms need clearance and often leave a metal bar under the mattress. All-foam sofa beds without a mechanism simply unfold – fewer parts, nothing to jam.
Mattress thickness. For regular sleeping, aim for 12 cm or more. Below 8 cm you will feel the base.
Seat comfort. It will be your everyday sofa first. Check the seat height and depth, and sit on it if you can.
Covers. Removable, washable covers matter more in a small flat, where one sofa is used for eating, working and sleeping. Order fabric samples to see colour and texture in your own light.
